On an international front, Christian Salvesen is a founding member of Transaid, a practical charity which improve lives in Africa by building local transport knowledge and skills to give people better access to basic services and work opportunities.
Transport is often the missing link that prevents people in Africa from accessing healthcare and education. Better use of existing transport resources improves service delivery and creates cost savings. This in turn increases the scope of the services and releases money to pay for health and education workers, drugs and other essential goods and services. Quite simply - Transaid helps people and precious funds to go further.
Its work with the Ministry of Health in Ghana resulted in 70% more kilometres being travelled in 13% less vehicles at lower overall cost. These efficiencies provided the extra capacity to reach 90,000 additional children a year for vaccination against some of the world's deadliest diseases.
Transaid is also committed to developing much needed professional transport qualifications and standards in Africa to build a skilled, safe, competitive industry. Transport is essential for trade and livelihoods, and, by cutting the amount of time and money spent on getting goods to market, making the roads safer and creating livelihoods opportunities, Transaid is helping to reduce poverty and road accidents.
